Major & Minor Programs

The Department of Philosophy and Religion offers a Philosophy major, a Religion major, and four minors.

Major Requirements:

Any student may petition the department to substitute other courses for those on these lists.

Dual credit: Students who are completing both a Philosophy major and a Religion major, or a major plus a minor, may count two courses toward the requirements of both programs.

Entry into classes: All department majors and minors are entitled to special permission numbers from instructors to enter classes that have filled.

Majors are encouraged to have a competence in a foreign language equivalent to that obtained through the intermediate level of study. Majors also are urged to develop, in consultation with the adviser, a strong minor program, or even a second major.


Honors Program:

Departmental majors will be eligible for honors in Philosophy or Religion by fulfilling the following special requirements in addition to the regular requirements:

  1. Obtain a 3.5 grade-point average in the courses required for the departmental major and a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average in the entire undergraduate program.
  2. Enroll in an Independent Study in Philosophy (730:495,496) or Religion (840:389,390) and prepare an acceptable honors thesis of approximately 25-30 pages.

In recognition of the satisfactory completion of the honors program, a student’s permanent academic record will receive the notation Honors in Philosophy or Honors in Religion.

Students interested in departmental honors should consult their advisor before the beginning of their senior year.
