Congratulations Dr. Stuart Charmé on your retirement!

Dr. Charmé has taught at Rutgers Camden for 47 years, rising to Professor of Religion and Director of the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (MALS) program. The impact of his work has been extraordinary. He has published three books, a documentary film, dozens of articles, and many other public expressions, on the role of authenticity in religious life. His scholarship has had, and continues to have, a wide influence in the fields of the psychology of religion, existentialist philosophy, Sartre studies, and Jewish studies.

At Rutgers, Dr. Charmé leaves a lasting educational legacy. In addition to serving for 14 years as Department Chair, he directed the Rutgers’ Study Abroad Program in Israel, the campus chapter of Hillel, the Freshman Seminars program, and the first General Education Committee. He was Director for the past 19 years of the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (MALS) program, during which time he turned it into the #1 online graduate liberal studies program in the country, vastly expanded it into the second largest graduate program on our campus, and created a new curriculum that has created life-changing experiences for hundreds of students over the years. His courses for both undergraduate and graduate students have inspired thousands of students over the years to think critically, diversely, and justly.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Charmé on his remarkable accomplishments and wishing him a joyful and rich next chapter.
